Taxi's in Amsterdam are quite expensive and taxi fares are a breed of their own. The fare for a taxi ride is measured by a meter, but the price is not fixed. The taxi owner can set his own price and program the taxi meter accordingly.
Current prices are:
Up to 4 passengers maximum € 5.12; 4 or more passengers maximum € 8.33 upon entry, when the meter starts;
Up to 4 passengers maximum € 1.94; 4 or more passengers maximum € 2.23 distance rate per kilometer;
Maximum € 32.87 per hour waiting time.
There are no extra charges, such as late night surcharges, luggage fairs, etc.
A few years ago, when the taxi market was deregulated in The Netherlands (against the advice of just about all experts in the field), first customers and drivers were supposed to agree on the fair for the ride. When that turned out te be unworkable, the present system was developed.
This current system is also disputed, so we expect new tarifs to be introduced some time soon.
Some tips (that probably apply for taxi's in most larger cities around the world):
Make sure the driver starts the meter after you get in and does not have it running already.
Make sure the driver takes the shortest route possible;
Officially there is no special luggage fare or a night tariff, but don't be surprised if the driver asks for it anyway.
