Vondelpark
The Vondelpark plays in important part in the live of the Amsterdammers. It is one of the few places in the city suited for jogging. On nice summer days you'll see the park's meadows filled with people enjoying the sun. On summer nights the park houses several free concerts per week. There are several nicely located terraces for drinks and meals. The park originates in 1864, when a group of wealthy inhabitants of Amsterdam started a Foundation and bought up swamplands. Shortly after opening the park, they placed a statue of Holland's famous writer and poet Joost van den Vondel. Because of that, people spontaneously started calling the park "Vondelpark", which later became its official name.
