Nieuwe KerkAfter the existing church had become too small, a new church was inaugurated in 1408. This church was named Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) and the name of the existing church was changed to "Old", Oude Kerk. The Nieuwe Kerk houses the graves of many famous Dutchmen, such as writer Joost van den Vondel and naval heroes Michiel de Ruyter and Jan van Speijk.
