Oude Kerk

The Oude Kerk -Old Church- was inaugurated in 1306 as a Catholic church, after brick replaced the wooden structure that had already been there for several decennia. In 1578 it was converted to a Reformed church. In the early days, when Amsterdam was just a village, the church was also used for activities such as repair of fishing nets and sails, and the city archives were kept here. Hence the Church' nickname "the living room of Amsterdam".
